When you drive through Newmarket, certain places always standout – including Southlake Health’s Davis Drive campus. An iconic landmark the community, everyone recognizes the hospital.
On August 11, nearly 50 community members joined Southlake for a Community Open House in Newmarket. Held at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall, the event was an opportunity for residents to learn more about Southlake Health’s vision to transform into a Distributed Health Network (DHN) over the next decade, including the redevelopment of the Davis Drive campus.
Community members explored informational displays, attended a presentation on the DHN, and asked questions of Southlake and its Foundation team. Residents also shared thoughtful questions, ideas and perspectives about the future of health care in Newmarket and across northern York Region and southern Simcoe County.
Community engagement is an important part of Southlake’s planning process, and the questions and feedback shared throughout the evening will help inform future engagement as planning continues.
What we heard
Residents expressed excitement about the future of health care in Newmarket and the redevelopment of the Davis Drive campus, while also raising thoughtful questions about how the various projects within the DHN will come together over time.
Key topics raised included:
The timing and sequencing of the Davis Drive campus redevelopment, including how it will align with the planning and development of the new acute care hospital in East Gwillimbury.
Regional services residents would like to see offered at the redeveloped campus and opportunities to expand access to regional programs and services.
How future planning will address the needs of Newmarket’s growing senior population.
How research, innovation and workforce development will be considered and incorporated into planning for the future of care.
How the redevelopment of the Davis Drive campus will support Southlake’s broader vision for a connected, integrated health system across the region.
The evening reinforced the strong interest in ensuring Newmarket residents continue to have access to leading edge care, close to home, while supporting the evolving health care needs of all communities Southlake is privileged to serve.
What’s next
The feedback shared in Newmarket will help inform future community engagement and planning as Southlake advances the redevelopment of its Davis Drive campus and works toward the broader vision for a Distributed Health Network.
As planning continues, Southlake Health remains committed to engaging residents, listening to community feedback and keeping the community informed every step of the way.
Thank you to everyone who attended, shared their perspectives and contributed to an engaging and thoughtful evening. We look forward to continuing the conversation with the Newmarket community as this important work progresses.
